As a new school year begins, the Quakertown Police Department is reminding students, parents, and drivers to take a few extra precautions to help keep everyone safe as children return to school.

Know the Safe Walking Route

With Quakertown Elementary School (QE) now located at the 6th Grade Center, the Safe Walking Route has been adjusted for students who walk or bike to school. An additional crossing guard has also been added, and new walking signs have been installed along the route to help students and families follow the designated path.

The Safe Walking Route begins at 8th Street and Juniper Street. Students walking to school should travel along 8th Street on the stadium side, or east side, of the sidewalk. Crossing guards will be stationed at 8th Street and Juniper Street and 8th Street and Park Avenue to assist students as they make their way to school. As students approach school property, they will walk through the parking lot along a designated path marked by newly installed traffic barriers. Students and families should watch for the new walking signs along the route and follow the designated path.

Tips for Students Walking or Biking to School

Before the first day of school, parents are encouraged to walk the route with their children so they know where to go and what to expect. Talk with your child about staying on the designated sidewalk, using crosswalks, and following the directions of crossing guards.

Students should also remember to stay alert and avoid distractions, especially when crossing streets or walking near vehicles. If biking to school, always wear a properly fitted helmet and follow the same traffic rules as motorists.

Drivers: Slow Down and Stay Alert

Drivers should expect to see more children walking and biking throughout the community as school gets underway. Please slow down in school zones and residential areas, watch carefully for students near crosswalks and intersections, and be prepared for children who may enter the roadway unexpectedly.

Remember to watch for school buses and stop when required. When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, motorists must stop and remain stopped until the lights stop flashing, the stop arm is retracted, and the bus begins moving again. Never attempt to pass a stopped school bus, and be especially alert for children entering or exiting the bus.

Never pass a vehicle that has stopped for a pedestrian, and always follow the directions of crossing guards and school personnel.
